“The Play That Goes Wrong” in Tempe

If you are looking for a fun night out this weekend — look no further!  “The Play That Goes Wrong” is now showing at the ASU Gammage Theater from March 19-24th, 2019.

My husband and I were treated by ASU Gammage to see the show this week and were absolutely blown away by it!

This was also our first time to the ASU Gammage Theater.  It is quite a big auditorium that holds just over 3,000 seats.  And the house was almost full!  Built in 1964, the theater does feel dated.  But I like the mid-century charm there.

The Play The Goes Wrong

The Setup

  • This is a classic “play within a play”.  A theater troop is putting on a show called “The Murder at Haversham Manor” — but from the beginning you know this troop has limited actors and limited budget.

  • Before the show begins, stage-hands are trying to fix the shoddy set and even recruit members of the audience to help.

The Show

  • Just when you think you’ve seen all the gags and slap-stick comedy in the book, more is always coming!  I have never laughed so hard in my life!!  Every line is hilarious and the timing to pull off the jokes is genius.

  • There is a 20 minute intermission (to catch your breath and re-hydrate from the tears!)

  • I didn’t think it was possible but the second half is even FUNNIER than the first half!

The Content

  • I always like to know what kind of content I’m getting into when I see a play or movie.  Without spoilers, here is all the “parental content warnings” I would give:

    • a lot of characters get hurt — either punched or slapped or knocked out.  None is graphic and all is for laughs

    • Sometimes the characters act suggestively towards one another, but nothing even close to graphic.  A man and woman kiss for a moment, and a man kisses another man very briefly.  A female character sometimes has “episodes” that seem sexual but it isn’t taken very far.

  • Overall this play is amazingly clean and family friendly.  If it wasn’t a night-show, I would not hesitate to take my 6 year old!

So, if you haven’t already, get your tickets!!  You can get them HERE for performances through Sunday night.
