Me wearing my “You Threw Off My Groove” sweatshirt to the Arizona Renaissance Festival last weekend
I have always wanted to own my own business and shirts are a great start for me. We were inspired by our friends who have their own shirt shop (i.e. a freaking adorable shirt shop called Mom Shirt Co), who helped mentor us in how to run this kind of business. The next step was figuring out a target audience… I didn’t want to open just ANY shirt shop, I felt like it needed to have some direction. About a year and a half ago, we were at Disneyland and I saw SO MANY people with matching/homemade/small shop Disney shirts and it clicked. I knew this would be a fun audience to work with… so finally last May (Yes, it took 9 months to bite the bullet), we opened up shop! And obviously I was right, I have loved working in this space.
Some of the shirts I design myself, but I rely heavily on Andrea Stevenson of Little Kit Design to do my graphic design work and Hannah Bradford (my sister-in-law!) of Hannah Bradford Art to do my drawings (like Mary Poppins, Han Solo, etc.). I LOVE surrounding myself with talented people and am open to work with others!
First, I need to get inspired and be excited about an idea. I don’t work well under pressure, so my ideas pretty much come organically. Sometimes it’s a photo on my Instagram feed, a song lyric, a favorite line from a movie… it can come from literally ANYWHERE. Then I peruse online/Pinterest for a color palette/design inspiration. I send my ideas/mood boards/notes to my artists who execute it beautifully (most of the time, BETTER than I had in mind). Finally, we send it to our favorite shirt printer, Custom Shirt Designs and More. They are based in Mesa, Arizona, and it’s been a dream having a local printer so close! I’m so grateful for the people I work with, I wouldn’t be able to do this alone.
This is TOPS the hardest question for me to answer. Growing up, it was definitely Little Mermaid. I have red hair, love to swim, and love to hoard random stuff, so Ariel and I are basically the same person. The Toy Story movies have a special place in my heart because my three daughters love them SO MUCH, probably the most watched Disney movies in our home. But, when it comes down to it, Mary Poppins takes the cake… nobody beats Queen Julie Andrews.
My favorite Disney Parks attraction? The Churro Cart, The Coke Corner, and Peter Pan’s Flight… Heaven on Earth.
